June 16 1960 – ‘Psycho’ premieres at the DeMille Theater, Broadway, New York.
Helped by a groundbreaking and meticulous advertising plan, Psycho quicly becomes a sensation.
Written by Joseph Stefano, Psycho is an adaptation of the 1959 Robert Bloch novel by the same name. Stefano had to decline further collaborations with Hitchcock, as he was about to produce and write for the antholgy series The Outer Limits.
As it already had been the case during the filming of Vertigo, the production company Paramount was opposed to the project, making Psycho the last Hitchcock movie made at the studio.
Following two aborted movies which would have featured Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, deprived from both budget and stars, Psycho was made for less than $800,000$ and helped Hitchcock regain his title of master of thrills and suspense.

The making and release of Psycho is the subject of Sacha Gervasi’s biopic Hitchcock, focusing on the relationship between the famous director (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife (Helen Mirren).
