December 14, 1926 – Agatha Christie is found at the Swan Hydropatic Hotel, Yorkshire… where she had been enjoying the spa, drinking cocktails, playing games and dancing for the last ten days.
Travelling by train, she had checked in at the Hotel as Teresa Needle, her husband’s mistress surname, her behavior at 180° from her usual shyness.
She claimed to be suffering from temporary amnesia, a few doctors confirming a nervous breakdown.
However, reporters and police never believed that story, as there were too many discrepancies in her account and evidences suggesting a premeditated disappearance.
…But isn’t such a mystery expected from the Queen of Crime?
Michael Apted directed “Agatha” in 1979, starring Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave. Far from being a biopic, it draws is structruce from the totally unrelated novel The Summer Aeroplane by writer Kathleen Tynan.
Doctor Who’s Season 4 episode ‘The Unicorn and the Wasp’ fictionalizes Agatha Christie’s disappearance in a… well, less than realistic fashion.
