1927 – Benjamin Bass, a young Lithuanian immigrant and avid book collector, opens a used bookstore on Fourth Avenue… with a cigar box as a cash register.
The store quickly flourishes, despite the rising rent and the disappearance of most Book Row bookshops. Benjamin, starting a family of his own in the United States, will soon be helped by his teenage son, Fred Bass.
