1927Benjamin Bass, a young Lithuanian immigrant and avid book collector, opens a used bookstore on Fourth Avenue… with a cigar box as a cash register.

His store, named after the London street of the same name famous for its publishing connections, is itself situated in ‘s ‘Book Row’, a literary artery since the 1890’s.

The store quickly flourishes, despite the rising rent and the disappearance of most Book Row . Benjamin, starting a family of his own in the , will soon be helped by his teenage son, Fred Bass.
