The concept and setting of ‘The Shining’, originally conceived as a play, are born.
1977 – The novel featuring Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel, is published in January by Doubleday.
1980 - Stanley Kubrick releases the film adaptation of The Shining, co-written by Diane Johnson, featuring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.
The film will grow to become a classic, despite Stephen King’s initial dissatisfaction with the movie, which downplays supernatural elements and some components of the novel.
2013 – Stephen King releases ‘Doctor Sleep’, a sequel of The Shining.
