1956 – Fred Bass, returning from the Army, takes over management of the store and relocates The Strand on Broadway.
1972 – Patti Smith works at The Strand along with Tom Verlaine. An accomplished vocalist and musician, Verlaine will collaborate with Smith on her debut albums “Horses” & “Radio Ethiopia”, and occasionally in the following decades.
2007 – The Strand, now co-owned by Fred’s daughter Nancy Bass Wyden, turns 80. It occupies 55,000 square feet of space, hosting more than 2,5 million books on 18 miles worth of shelves.
Not bad for a used bookstore created by a young immigrant with a cigar box as a register.
